The ketogenic diet (or keto for short) has become really popular in recent years to assist with weight loss, diabetes and epilepsy. So what is it?
The keto diet is high fat and low carbohydrate diet. This reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. When you go through ketosis, your body becomes efficient at burning fat for energy.
Pros:
– weight loss
– reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels and improves insulin resistance
– can positively impact women diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
– health benefits for specific people including reducing seizures for paediatric patients
Cons:
– difficult to sustain
– calorie depletion and nutrient deficiencies
– use of bad fats (saturated and trans fats) which can effect your heart
– renal (kidney) risk
– food obsession
Overall, if you would like to try this diet it is best to contact a dietitian to ensure you are getting adequate nutrition. For more information don’t hesitate to contact me via private message or via email on: health@liaros.com.au
